D.C, as called by the locals, is more than the place to be for politics and sustainability. It’s also a place to visit museums and monuments, experience art and culture, and take in the nation’s rich history and architecture. The Smithsonian has become an the biggest collection of learning and history featuring the National Air and Space Museum, Museum of Natural History, Museum of American History and Museums of Asian art. One of the best parts of museum hopping in D.C. – it’s all free.

Alongside these great museums are Washington’s monuments that lay tribute to the important symbols and remembrance of those who fallen in our great wars. A place where you can spend hours on a nice autumn day while overlooking the Potomac River.

If it’s culture you’re looking for, check out a show at the Kennedy Center, or head to one of the local jazz clubs on U Street. If its history, art, shopping or eating you’re looking for, Washington, D.C. has you covered! From Georgetown to Eastern Market, everything you need is just a metro ride away.

JOINING FORCES FOR WATER

The drought is everybody’s business. We are proud to pledge alliance with other local businesses to show support for and draw attention to the critical need to implement a comprehensive water management plan for the state of California and for local regions, like L.A.

We need to act with a sense of urgency and encourage more Angelenos and Californians to support sound initiatives that will put CA on a more sustainable path. The longer we wait, the greater the impacts this drought and future shortages will have on the environment, economy and jobs.

SPOTLIGHT: HUALIEN COUNTY SCHOOL RENOVATION

Welcome back! Today we will be featuring a new international installation. Let’s get right to it, shall we?

In order to improve school buildings in remote areas, Hualien County retrofitted 63 school restrooms, installing 500 waterfree urinals. The interesting aspect of this renovation, is that the schools are using the new restrooms to educate the community. By holding a presentation, teachers and directors had the chance to explain how our waterfree urinal works and demonstrate the environmental benefits they provide.

WHY THE HYBRID TECHNOLOGY?

Every time we use the bathroom it is easy to take for granted the water being flushed that takes away all the unpleasant bathroom stuff in a blink of an eye. With each pull of the lever, gallons of clean water come to whisk away a few ounces of pee. It’s pretty wasteful if you think about it, and the current drought has helped convince facilities to consider waterless urinals and many other water conservation technologies. With rebates available and water saving mandates throughout the State of California, building managers are shifting towards waterless fixtures. However,  waterfree technology has had a  long road to market acceptance and this road has led us to rethink the technology itself.

Why does a urinal need to be flushed in the first place? If you think about it, urine is liquid and with gravity it will drain down the pipes by itself. For those who haven’t peeped behind the pipes and studied what goes on behind the scenes, the answer may not be so obvious, however we know that pipes need caring for and if you do not properly maintain any bathroom fixture, it will lead to problems such as odor and clogging of pipes.

These are exciting times for plumbing manufacturers and especially for us that want to save water. In April, California passed a new bathroom appliance standard requiring that new urinals starting in 2016 use no more than 0.125 gallons of water per flush forcing Californian’s to turn to pint flush urinals or waterless. However, one does not function like the other and each requires different types of maintenance. We have approached a crossroads where fixtures need to not only save water, but it’s imperative that they function properly without deteriorating the integrity of the existing plumbing system.

There is a fine line when decreasing the amount of water flushed down the drain. Pipes need more than just your regular daily trickle of water to work properly. This is the WHY behind our latest technology. The Hybrid combines the best of both worlds; you still get the three part system that functions daily without the use of water, however once a week the housing, cartridge and piping system flushes itself with a touch-free powerful one gallon surge that cleans your pipes and reduces your bathroom odor.

We are proud our technologies  have saved more than 20 billion gallons of water over the past 10 years, but even more proud that we are building a future infrastructure that will not be at the cost of the performance of the plumbing systems.

WE SIGNED THE CLIMATE DECLARATION – AND YOU SHOULD TOO

We are excited to have signed the Building and Real Estate Climate Declaration! Ceres, the U.S. Green Building Council, and the Carbon Leadership Forum, has launched the campaign of the Climate Declaration.

More than 1,500 U.S. businesses have signed on to the Climate Declaration – but the buildings and real estate sector is underrepresented. Becoming a signatory is more than just words — it underscores our view that climate change is a serious global challenge that represents a major economic opportunity in terms of energy savings. And we are happy to be a part of it!

The Building and Real Estate Climate Declaration provides an opportunity for the entire sector –architects and engineers, building product manufacturers, contractors, developers and real estate investors – to take a stand on climate in an impactful way. The Climate Declaration will demonstrate strong business support from building-sector companies for taking action on climate change and energy policy at all levels. And it will spotlight the critical role that companies in the buildings and real estate sector play in advancing energy efficiency and distributed renewable energy, reducing embodied carbon in materials, and developing other innovations that reduce carbon emissions throughout building life cycles.

Spread the word and sign the declaration!

GUEST POST: GENERATION DROUGHT

Post by Kayla Imhoff from TreePeople LA

Even after 42 years, TreePeople’s message has remained the same. We exist to help nature heal our cities.

However, we’ve shifted our methods to carry out our mission as we strive to ebb and flow with ever changing environmental challenges in Los Angeles. Our education program is a prime example. TreePeople has always been a force for effective environmental education. The original Eco-tour program, which started in the late 70’s, still exists today. Every day, students visit Coldwater Canyon Park to experience the wonder of nature firsthand. Today, TreePeople is proudly recognized as the largest environmental education provider in the state, seeing well over 10,000 school kids each year.

In 1985, when the City of Los Angeles struggled to motivate residents to adopt a curbside recycling program, who did they turn to? TreePeople. Using a combination of school assembly presentations, as well as the Eco-tour program, we were able to influence students on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. Furthermore, children walked away inspired to implement these skills in their homes. As a result, the city saw the recycling movement soar.

Amidst a four year drought, our concerns have shifted from waste to water. As busy parents struggle to understand the implications of drought and new water restrictions, TreePeople is raising up a generation passionate about conservation. Kids get it. In fact, educating kids about LA’s urban watershed has been our focus since the early 90’s—years before the drought began.

What started as a simple, tangible model of our water cycle using paper cups has become a much more sophisticated operation. We now have an entire urban watershed garden, complete with live models, allowing students to watch rain journey from the sky to storm drains, carrying pollutants to the ocean. Their faces often express their shock. How could “grown ups” build such a problematic system? On the flip side, our “sustainable solutions house” lets students see the potential for stormwater capture. That same rainfall can be collected in rain-barrels and used into mulched climate-appropriate landscaping.

I love seeing kids leave, feeling empowered to make a difference in their households. We even get fan mail. Children send us thank you letters, and update us on how they’re employing their new skills. We hope they’ll inspire their parents. And they often do.

TREEPOEPLE

As an organization, we aim to solve urban environmental issues. This work has several branches. We work on the policy level with city agencies, facilitate a hands-on forestry restoration program, offer community workshops, and maintain our commitment to our K-12 education program. We know kids are they key to change. They are our future. When you invite them to make a difference they don’t just listen. They act. Let’s learn from them!

TreePeople just launched a campaign for the LA2050 competition and they need support in the form of votes. Click here and see what it’s all about.

If you want to know more about the organization and how you can help head on over to their website. We also love connecting with them through social media – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
